We Take A Lot Of Pride In Our Work
Since 1965 we have moved thousands of pieces of machinery, plant and equipment. The following case studies illustrate both our widespread client base and the diverse capabilities of our expert team.
Overhead Crane Installation, Konecranes Demag Ltd, Manchester
This project involved D. Turner & Son both planning and installing a new Demag overhead crane system within a factory in Manchester. The client are global leaders in the overhead crane industry.
Our role was to advise the client regarding installation of their new overhead crane equipment and also carry out the installation itself. D. Turner & Son advised the client to remove a firewall in order to extend existing overhead crane rail beams into the building. Subsequently, we used our 25/35 and 60/80 tonne versa-lift and skates’ system in order to position crane beams inside the factory for each overhead crane to be lifted onto. D. Turner & Son’s Appointed Person then instructed 2x mobile cranes to perform the lift.
To complete the project, our team of engineers re-built the overhead crane in preparation for testing by the Demag team.
Removal, Relocation & Installation
Halco Drilling Factory Relocation
This factory relocation project was undertaken in 2013 for Halco Drilling International, Halifax. The client is a subsidiary of Terex Corporation, a global construction, crane/aerial platform manufacturing and material processing company.
Halco manufactures diamond drilling equipment for the mining industry. We have maintained a long term working relationship with this client and have undertaken a range of machine relocations for Halco over a period of 10 years.
Working closely with Halco’s manufacturing planners, our role was to dismantle, remove and pack over 20 x engineering machines and to relocate, align, install, rewire and commission them at a new site in Brighouse. This work was carried out to a detailed plan that maintained optimum productivity and output from all of the machines.
Lifting & Transportation
Press Relocation, JVM Castings, Tamworth to Worcester
This press relocation project was undertaken in 2018/9 for JVM Castings, Tamworth. The client provides aluminium diecasting manufacturing, capable of producing 15 tonnes per hour.
Our role was to dismantle 2x 1500 tonne Die-casting presses in Tamworth, transport (to Worcester) and install each press in their new location.
These were complex and extremely heavy machine presses which involved using our 400 tonne Hydraulic Lifting Gantry (Megalift) system. Our team of engineers used the lifting gantry to uplift each press from its factory location enabling placement onto our skidding system. Following this, D. Turner & Son were able to load each press onto transport. The same equipment and methods were then used to re-install both presses into their new factory relocation.
Dismantle & Relocation
Swan Hunter, Newcastle-upon-Tyne
This heavy lifting and transportation project was undertaken in 2007 for Swan Hunter, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland. The client has built large ships in the past but now provides engineering, design and management services to ship building and off-shore industries.
Our role in the project was to dismantle and remove 2 x 2,000 tonnes rolling presses from the factory site in Newcastle and to transport them to port for onward shipping and relocation to a new site in India. The rolling presses are used for shaping hull components for large ships.
We employed 2 x 500 tonnes mobile cranes, 2 x 100 tonnes cranes and tri-lifts together with appropriate heavy haulage vehicles.
Removal and Re-installation
Cenotaph Lamp Refurbishment, Rochdale Memorial Gardens
This removal and re-installation project was undertaken for Rochdale Borough Council at the historic Rochdale Town Hall Memorial Gardens in 2017 as part of the councils 15-year regeneration masterplan. 4x Grade II-listed lamps were located at each corner of the Cenotaph which had been in place since the 1920’s.
Our role was to gently remove each lamp from its original concrete column; transport to their restoration destination and then reinstall once restoration had been completed. We used our 6tn Valla mobile crane and rear mounted lorry loader in order to complete this task.
In 2018, we were asked to remove a further 13x lighting columns from the same location which are currently undergoing the careful restoration process and will be reinstalled by us upon completion later in 2019.
